Kiwanis Club honors ‘First Reponders of the Year,’ during luncheon

Kay Long, James ‘Cory’ Shumate, Zechariah Demshar, Barry Mosier and Adam Pinion were named ‘First Responders of the Year,’ when the Kiwanis Club held its August meeting at the DoubleTree Hotel, Thursday.

A firefighter, Kay Long has been a member of the Madison County Fire Department for six years, helping coordinate fundraisers while spending numerous hours to help prepare the equipment at Fire Station No. 5 for any emergency.

James ‘Cory’ Shumate was honored for his work as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician at West Tennessee Healthcare.

Shumate provides leadership to new employees while offering advice to students seeking to enter the profession. His interaction with patients is considered to be a shining example for the West Tennessee Healthcare culture.

Zechariah Demshar has been a member of the Jackson Fire Department since December 2005, and is currently assigned to Engine 13.

Demshar, who was unable to attend the awards ceremony, is also certified by TEMA as a hazardous materials technician, and is assigned to the Jackson Fire Department’s Region 10 Hazardous Materials Team.

A Licensed Emergency Medical Responder, Demshar continously volunteers his time – on and off duty – to assist the Jackson Fire Department’s Training Division in an effort to provide training for Recruit Firefighters.

The Kiwanis Club selected Deputy Barry Mosier of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department as the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.

An Accident Reconstructionist and Field Training Officer, he was recommended for the award because he has demonstrated the ability to lead while always willing to help others achieve their goal.

Adam Pinion accepted the Kiwanis Club’s Officer of the Year for the Jackson Police Department.

Named the department’s officer of the month for February, Officer Pinion is Field Training Officer, a Crisis Intervention Training Instructor and Basic Life Support Instructor.

“The Kiwanis Club has been good to honor the First Responders,” Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist said. “This is a special calling for them, but there’s not enough praise until we need them.”
