JSCC Baseball Recap: Swept by the Eagles

Click here to hear what Coach Tyson Malik had to say about the Generals this week.

The Generals (11-14) continued to struggle, as they faced Dyersburg State Community College (14-7) last weekend and fell in all three games. Jackson State is ninth in the conference with a 1-8 record. They have a big opportunity to bounce back this weekend as they welcome in the Tigers of Chattanooga State to Jack Martin Field.

Game 1: March 17, 2018 (L 5-1)

The freshman DJ Wright (2-3) got the start for Jackson and threw a solid five innings giving up only three runs. He also allowed eight hits, one walk, and struck out three. It was solid day that came to halt one batter into the sixth inning when Wright gave up his third walk and the signs of fatigue were showing. Coach Tyson Malik decided it was best to bring in reliever Spencer Woods (1-1). Woods lasted for only one out giving up two runs, and Kyle Brana (1-1) was brought in to finish out the sixth.

The bats for Jackson only produced four hits and one run which came in the top of the sixth inning as Donnell Bailey knocked an RBI single to score Mike Conn. The Generals finished with a total of eight base runners but left seven of them stranded as they couldn’t muster up consecutive hits to go along with the four walks they were dealt.

Game 2: March 17, 2018 (L 16-3)

Game two started out well for Jackson as the sophomore and Lee University commit Alan Rickman (0-5) started on the mound. Rickman kept the Eagles off the board through two innings. The Generals were able to cross the plate three times, once in the second and twice in the third putting them up 3-0 as the bottom of the third inning began. An exciting start would soon be forgotten as the bats for Dyersburg caught fire and were aided by a Generals fielding error. The Eagles scored 10 times in the third inning, only four of those runs were credited to Rickman’s ERA. Runs continued to pour in as relievers Derrick Junker (0-0), Zach Gresham (1-1), and Brandon Maxwell (1-1) all pitched less than one inning.

The scoring recap for the Generals could have been written in the fourth inning as they started out hot putting up one run in the second off of an RBI Single for Will Harris that scored Sam Williams. In the third inning Garret Guymon hit a solo home run that was followed by Parker Moss reaching base and Williams reaching on an error that would score Moss. The Generals finished with only five hits and one walk on the day.

Game 3: March 18, 2018 (L 15-12)

On Sunday the Generals came to life at the plate and Coach Malik had good things to say about his starting pitcher Tyler Proctor (2-0), but Jackson’s fielding suffered all game long and was the biggest contributor to Sunday’s loss. The Generals had seven errors in the game allowing 15 runs by the Eagles. Only six of which were credited the Generals’ pitching staff. Josh Coburn (2-1 ) was actually credited with the loss as the first reliever throwing 2.1 innings allowing five hits, five runs (2 ER), one walk along with one strikeout. Woods and Brana finished out the day for Jackson.

The bats turned on for the Generals as they put up 12 runs in seven innings. It started in the second inning with two RBI singles for Harris and Conn along with an RBI double for Ian Bibiloni. In the Third inning Bibiloni kept it going with another RBI single followed by a double for Guymon that scored two. In the fourth Conn picked up an RBI with a base hit and was brought around to score when Guymon hit his ninth home run of the season! In the eighth inning the Generals trailed by three as Conn singled and allowed Bibiloni to score on an error in right field. Guymon picked up another RBI and brought Jackson’s total score to 12. The Generals let Dyersburg score two more in the bottom of the inning and were unable to pick up the scoring again in the ninth.

Garrett Guymon now leads the Generals in AVG (.389), RBI’s (25), HR’s (9), Total Bases (62), SLG% (.861), Stolen Bases (4) and is tied for most hits with Ian Bibiloni (28).

The Generals face Bethel University (JV) in mid-week action on Wednesday followed by a three game series against the Chattanooga State Tigers this weekend at home. Jackson is still looking for its second conference win of the season.
