Jackson Walk Phase II: Landscape continues to change on West Deaderick Street

Usually, a sequel can disappoint, but it doesn’t look as if that will be the case for Jackson Walk Phase II on West Deaderick Street.

Phase II – an expansion that will include 120 new apartments and 40 single-family homes, is in line to connect the revitalization of downtown Jackson to another major asset – the University of Memphis Lambuth.

“We’re trying to keep up with the demand for housing in the area,” said Chris Alexander, vice president of retail and residential development for Healthy Community LLC, “The 149 apartments at Jackson Walk Phase I are full, and we are (continuing) to see an increased demand for new homes.”

The setting is a 10 acre site that locals will remember as the former home of West Jackson Baptist Church.

In the shadows of Jackson Walk Phase I and II, Alexander points out 25 newly constructed homes that are part of the equation, but not generally found in the discussion.

Lots where blighted homes once stood are being demolished, and several older homes are – and have been – renovated.

The most recent abandoned and blighted homes demolished stood at 133 and 137 West Deaderick Street, near North Highland Avenue.

They were demolished July 12.

Alexander said surrounding property owners on West Deaderick Street near North Highland Avenue should see an increase in home values.
