Jackson City Council Approves Hiring Nine New Officers

 
 

 
The Jackson City Council held their monthly meeting on Tuesday with several funding requests on the agenda
 
The February meeting was a very agreeable meeting for council member who voted unanimous of every request
 
Al LaFoon,Jackson City Recorder, is out on medical leave so the council, upon recommendation of Mayor Jerry Gist, approved Sam Dawson as temporary city recorder.  Dawson will also continue to serve in his role as assistant to the Mayor.  Al Lafoon is expected to return to his position.  Dawson said he has spoken with Lafoon and assured him his job will be there when he can return.
 
The council approved repairs to the Jackson  Madison County Library.  The city will pay two thirds of the $13,500 project.

The County will be responsible for the remaining one third portion of the project cost.
 
Council approved unanimously a budget amendment to hire nine new Jackson Police Department officers.  
 
Councilman Scott Conger said this about hiring new officers As the warm weather approaches, it becomes imperative for us to have more officers on the streets, especially in high crime area to ensure the safety of our citizens."
 
$105,797.95 will be moved from fund balance to pay salaries and benefits for the new hire through the fiscal year.
 
Council also approve a $57,386. fund request to put a roof on the downtown Amphitheater.
 
The council approved the appointments to the Jackson Municipal Regional Planning Commission, the Ned McWherter West Tennessee Cultural Arts Center Board,  and the Keep Jackson Beautiful Commission.
