Ice Storm Moves Into West Tennessee

­(March 3, 2014) Jackson TN – Ice covers the streets, trees, and power lines of Jackson and the surrounding area.

What started as rain become sleet,ice, and snow as temperatures dropped into the teens.

Ice on trees and power lines has caused power outages for thousands of homes,icy streets are hazardous to navigate and numerous traffic accidents have been reported

Law enforcement authorities urge you to stay off the road unless travel is a necessity

There are currently approximately 1500 JEA electric customers without service.

Breaker 234 McKellar remains open which cuts service in that area.

Also four poles are down in the Pipkin Road area.

Rolling Acres is another area without service.

In addition limbs on lines have blown fuses in other areas.

Priority in service restoration is to focus on steps that will result in largest number of customers restored.

Service restoration will be slowed with subfreezing temps continuing today and tonight .

Crews are at work.

Gibson Electric Membership Corporation crews are still working to restore power to members in Crockett and Gibson counties. Currently there are seven outages affecting 18 members’ homes and businesses. We appreciate our members’ patience as restoration in ice is time-intensive.

To ensure that Gibson EMC is aware of your outage, members who are without power are encouraged to call the co-op’s Outage Hotline at 1-800-977-4076.

Also, to allow employees time to safely travel back to their homes before dark, Gibson EMC’s Member Service Centers will be closing today at 3:30 p.m.

Businesses, local, state and government offices and most public buildings are closed.

Some businesses and plants are also adjust shift schedules to allow employees to either stay home or leave early.

It is too early to have an estimate on the financial cost of this ice storm to property but calls of trees on roofs and other damage have been constant since Sunday night
