It may have surprised more than a few people after James Baxter defeated T. Robert Hill in the Democratic Primary for State Representative in District 73, last Thursday.
But it didn’t surprise Baxter, who faces Republican Chris Todd in Tennessee’s General election, November 6.
Baxter received 1,790 votes compared to 1,406 for T. Robert Hill.
“I knew that I would win the election,” Baxter said. “God is on my side, and if God is for you, who can be against you. I want to thank all of the constituents who went out to the polls and voted for James A. ‘Better’ Baxter.
“In Tennessee, we ‘can do better.'”
Baxter, who was in a sometimes heated campaign with T. Robert Hill, said he has not heard from his opponent.
“It was a tough race, and I hope he will support our campaign. We need to stay unified in November,” Baxter said. “We took the high ground. When I entered this race, there were those who counted me out, but nothing can stop us.
“The Democratic Party is on the move, and we will win in November, I can (also) work across the aisle with my Republican colleagues.”
Healthcare, education and economic development highlight Baxter’s platform.
Baxter wasn’t shy when asked about becoming the face of the Democratic Party in Jackson-Madison County.
“I embrace it with a humble spirit,” Baxter said. “It’s given me a charge. I do it gracefully and humbly.”
