The Haywood Tomcats, the No. 1 team in the Baker’s Dozen Coaches Poll, opened their season with a 14-12 win over No. 3 Henry County in Brownsville, Friday.
Haywood entered the fourth quarter with a 14-3 lead, and held off the Patriots, who scored a touchdown and field goal, but failed on a two-point conversion.
Chester County 28, USJ 27
Chester County should find themselves in the Coaches Poll next week, following an impressive 28-27 win over visiting University School of Jackson, ranked fourth in the first coaches poll.
A 40-yard run by Chester County’s Harrison Taylor gave the Eagles a 28-13 lead in the fourth quarter.
USJ countered with two touchdowns – a six-yard run by Trevor Spencer and a Jacob Buie to Ryan Miller nine-yard touchdown pass to cut the margin to one, but Chester County’s Brandon Lewis and Kenzie Huddleston combined for the play of the game when they blocked the extra point attempt.
TCA 54, Jackson Christian 0
Viktor Horton scored four touchdowns and rushed for 153 yards on 14 carries for the 13th ranked Lions in their 54-0 win.
“It was exciting the way our kids came out,” TCA coach Blake Butler said. “We returned nine players on each side of the ball, so they were familiar with what we do … not a lot of new teaching – we built on the past.
“Win or lose, there are things you want to clean up, but overall, there’s not a lot to complain about.”
Huntingdon 34, McKenzie 0
The Mustangs christened its new playing surface by pitching a shutout over county rival McKenzie.
Tyreese Maybin scored two touchdowns – a 16-yard run and 13-yard reception from quarterback Kade Pearson (8-of-10, 195 yards, two TD passes), who scored the game’s first touchdown, a 24-yard run in the first quarter.
Germantown 48, North Side 0
The Indians, No. 9 in the wnws.com Coaches Poll, trailed 41-0 at intermission.
North Side was held to 89 yards total offense, with the majority coming on a 55-yard pass play from quarterback Triston Cook to Julian Smith.
