Georgia sex offender arrested by U.S. Marshals and Decatur County Sheriff’s Office

“The U.S. Marshals Service has the authority under the Adam Walsh Act to bring federal charges against sex offenders who fail to register and cross state-lines.” – U.S. Marshal Tyreece Miller.

Decatur County, Tennessee – Terrell Powell, 40, of Georgia, was arrested earlier this week by the U.S. Marshals Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force in Jackson with the assistance of the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office.

Powell was previously convicted in Lowndes County, Georgia, for Sexual Exploitation of a Minor.

Due to his conviction, Powell was required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). Powell crossed state-lines from Georgia to Tennessee and failed to update his registration as required by SORNA, which is a violation of federal law.

On Monday, April 10th, the U.S. Marshals Service in the Western District of Tennessee presented the case to a federal grand jury in Jackson resulting in Powell being indicted for Failure to Register.

On April 12th, members of the Two Rivers Task Force and Decatur County Sheriff’s Deputies went to 5360 Liberty Road in Scotts Hill to locate and apprehend Powell.

Deputies surrounded the house and knocked and announced their presence at the door.

Powell surrendered without incident and was transported to the federal courthouse in Jackson where he will face a federal judge.
