Gary Pickens resigns City Council seat; resumes being accepted for District 1 position

Jackson, Tennessee – The Mayor’s Office is accepting resumes to fill the unexpired term of City of Jackson District One Councilman Gary Pickens.

Pickens, who could not be reached for comment, was elected to the position May 7, 2019.

In accordance with the Charter of the City of Jackson, TN, “A vacancy in the office of a council member shall be filled by appointment of a qualified resident of that district by a two-thirds (2/3) majority vote of those who are present and voting.

“All persons appointed to fill vacancies in accordance with the provisions of this section, except the mayor, shall serve until the next regularly scheduled municipal election.

The election to fill a vacancy shall be held in accordance with the provisions for a regular council
seat.”

Those seeking to apply for the position must meet the requirements set by the State of Tennessee
(https://madisoncountytn.gov/226/Qualifications-for-Office) and must be a resident of District One in
the City of Jackson, TN (a copy of the district map can be found at http://citycouncil.jacksontn.gov).
Resumes must be submitted by September 21, 2022, to the Office of the Mayor at
mayor@jacksontn.gov.

After the resumes or applications for the position have been accepted, each individual will have the opportunity to speak during the agenda review for October, and once again when the city council holds its monthly meeting in October.
