NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Five Civil War battlefields, including one in Jackson, are receiving nearly $2.5 million in preservation funding from two Tennessee commissions.

The Tennessee Historical Commission and Tennessee Wars Commission said Wednesday that about 180 acres of land will be preserved through the state’s Civil War Sites Preservation Fund. More than $367,000 will help preserve 120 acres of the Jackson, or Salem Cemetery, battlefield.

More than $1.8 million helps acquire 42 acres of the Stones River Battlefield.

About $232,000 will preserve 9 acres of the Wauhatchie battlefield in Chattanooga. That grant will preserve Brown’s Tavern, a 212-year-old structure used during the Trail of Tears and owned by John Brown, a Cherokee man who received special dispensation from the U.S. government to avoid removal.
