‘Fly your flag proudly, always’ – Flag Day celebrated at Liberty Gardens

Flag Day, an idea that originated from an educator in a small-town in Wisconsin celebrated its 100th anniversary throughout the nation, today.

Members of the military – veterans and those who continue to serve today – joined local elected officials for a ceremony held at Liberty Gardens, 24 Channing Way.

“Remember, you are American citizens and to be proud of it every day of your life,” said Victor Corson, a World War II Veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam War, “It’s not something to take lightly. There are many service personnel not here today, because you are free in a country that has more to offer than any other nation in the world.”

Corson, who was introduced by Master of Ceremonies Joseph Lane, joined Jackson Mayor Scott Conger, Madison County Mayor A.J. Massey, American Legion State Commander Lanny Culver, U.S. Army SSGT Chad Hornsby and Jan McGill Phillips – Daughters of the American Revolution – as guest speakers.

The Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard demonstrated the 13 Folds of the American Flag.

“The Jackson-Madison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) supports the National Society DAR’s principal objective to keep the flag flying and to protect it continuously under all conditions as well as educate citizens regarding its correct usage,” Jan McGill Phillips said, “We celebrate the symbolism of our American Flag – Red stand for hardiness and valor, White stands for purity and innocence, and Blue symbolizes diligence, perseverance and justice.

“In total, our beloved flag stands for freedom.

“Fly your flag proudly, always – especially on this day – dedicated to remembering all it represents.”
