NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Attorneys are asking the U.S. Supreme Court for a stay of a looming execution in Tennessee after the state Supreme Court and governor decided against the delay. In a filing Tuesday, attorneys for Billy Ray Irick wrote that there should be a stay of his scheduled lethal injection Thursday while a challenge of the state’s death penalty protocol continues. Irick was convicted of the 1985 rape and murder of a 7-year-old Knoxville girl.
Execution set for tomorrow
