MADISON CO. (August 17, 2015) – At Monday’s County Commission meeting Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris told the legislative body (commissioners) he was very pleased at the number of citizen’s, and groups that were taken it on themselves to make the county a better place. Providing Automatic Electronic Defibrillators (AED’s) is one example of the good work going one.
Harris introduced News Talk 101.5 FM station owner Carlton Veirs, GM, Larry Wood, and Steve Bowers, along with Ted Nelson. The station is trying to raise dollars to purchase AED’s for every police and sheriff’s vehicle through a program called HeartBeat.
CPR is important but AED’s are vital to saving lives when a person has a cardiac event, said Steve Bowers.
Ted Nelson said he is a believer in the difference AED’s can make in giving hope to a victim survival if they have a heart attack. Nelson presented an AED to the county mayor for the county courthouse or to be used wherever it is needed.
Harris said, I think what it means is that in the future we save more lives in our community simply because we have a simple device that is riding around with firefighter, a sheriff’s deputy, or a police officer that they can immediately save a life.
About 100 AEDs are needed to fulfill the goal. Already, 15 have been awarded to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, thanks to a grant from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.
Plans are to organize fundraising events. People around the community are encouraged to come up with their own ideas and join in the effort to help save lives.
