The vote was near unanimous when the Jackson City Council voted against the selection of a committee to review the salary of City Council members – and the Mayor’s office – when the City Council met Tuesday, at City Hall.
“The only reason it was on the agenda, is because next month would be the last time, according to charter, we could form a committee to study those two issues and they elected not to exercise their right,” Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist said. “If they elect to do it again, the earliest will be 18 months prior to the 2023 election.”
Eight council members voted in favor of the motion presented by Councilman David Cisco.
Councilman Johnny Dodd abstained.
“Councilman Cisco beat me to the punch,” Councilman Scott Conger said. “I was going to make the same motion to forego the salary review committee for the council and mayor. It is a privilege for us to serve the City of Jackson, and keep our salary the same.”
Conger and Randy Wallace voted ‘no’ on a the consideration of a contract for construction of a roundabout – Cisco abstained – on North Highland Avenue, between East and West Deaderick Streets.
The contract to build the roundabout was awarded to Ford Construction Company at a cost of $1,793,899.54.
“I hope the roundabout is successful,” Conger said. “But, I don’t think a federal highway is the place to have our first roundabout … so, I have consistently voted against those projects.”
