Cougars on the Climb: JCM Looks to Build on Breakout 2024 Season

The 2024 season was a banner year for theĀ Jackson Central-Merry Cougars, who put together one of their most exciting and competitive campaigns in recent memory. Finishing with aĀ 9-3 overall record and 5-2 in region play, the Cougars not only reclaimed local bragging rights by sweeping all in-city rivals, but they also walked away with theĀ Commissioners Cup Championship, capping a season filled with high-powered offense, stingy defense, and signature wins.

Led by standout junior quarterbackĀ Terell Williams, the Cougars’ offense was a force, averaging more thanĀ 30 points per game. Williams showcased poise and playmaking ability well beyond his years, spreading the ball around and managing the game with maturity. His favorite target, junior wide receiverĀ Michael Massey, became a constant big-play threat and one of the most reliable hands in the region. Senior running backĀ BJ McKnightĀ provided the balance, toughness, and leadership that fueled the ground game and set the tone for the offense.

JCM made headlines withĀ huge regular-season wins over the Milan Bulldogs and the defending 2A state champions, Decatur County Riverside Panthers, proving they could go toe-to-toe with some of the state’s most respected programs. Though their playoff run ended with a rematch loss to Milan in the second round, the Cougars left no doubt they were among the top teams in West Tennessee.

Equally impressive was the defensive unit, which held opponents to underĀ 19 points per gameĀ over the course of the season. With disciplined coverage, tough line play, and well-timed turnovers, the Cougars’ defense consistently gave the offense a chance to shine.

Looking ahead to 2025, the Cougars areĀ poised for another deep playoff push. Terell Williams returns for his senior year, with even more experience and control of the offense. Joining him is a wave of returning talent, including standout junior tight end and outside linebackerĀ Jayland Eckford, a two-way difference-maker who will be key to JCM’s success on both sides of the ball. The roster will also benefit from a core group ofĀ senior leaders, ready to take the next step and push the program further.

With momentum on their side and talent across the board, the Cougars will aim to defend theirĀ Commissioners Cup titleĀ and return to the TSSAA playoffs with unfinished business. If 2024 was a statement, 2025 could be the breakthrough. Cougar Nation should be excited — this team is built to compete and ready to rise.
