Construction on a new City Court Building, which will be located adjacent to the Jackson Police Department Complex, 234 Institute St., is scheduled to begin in early September.
The proposal was approved during the Jackson City Council’s August meeting at City Hall, Tuesday.
MG Construction will build the new 13,500-square-facility on land owned by the City of Jackson.
Construction costs are estimated at $2,682,216.
Rent used for the building at its current location will be diverted for the new facility, which will be owned by the city.
About $2 million has been spend on the lease at City Court’s 101 E. Lafayette St., location.
“The council approve the low bid, and the location has always been the location of choice,” said Jerry Gist, mayor of Jackson. “Drug Court will be in the same building (and) by the time we pay the lease costs on the City Court Building and Drug Court, that will be just about enough to make the payments on the loan.”
The City Council also approved an ordinance to rezone property along the 390 block of Cooper Anderson Road from RS-1 (Single Family Residential) District to RS-1/PRD (Single Family Residential/Planned Residential Development) District comprising about 11.67 acres, submitted by McAlexander Engineering.
The Council also approved a resolution authorizing the public taking by eminent domain of property for improvements to Whitehall Pre-K School.
