City Council considers barricade for alley between E. Lafayette St. and E. College St.

A consideration of an ordinance to barricade an unnamed north/south alley between East College Street, East Lafayette Street, North Liberty Street and North Highland Avenue for the purpose of closing it to vehicular traffic was tabled by the Jackson City Council during their monthly meeting, Tuesday.

Jessica Shea of Forward Counceling & Medical Services, 109 E. Lafayette St., told City Council members she would lose access to a garage, which opens in the alley.

Forward Counseling & Medical Services is located at street level, and a condominium or apartment is on the second floor.

Stan Pilant, City of Jackson Planning Director, said the plan has always been to make the alley a pedestrian way.

“We didn’t see how she could pull a car in there,” Pilant said, “But the benefit to the public outweighs the small inconvenience that would be caused by it being closed to vehicular traffic.”

The proposal will be presented again during the City Council’s February meeting.

The vote to table the motion according to Jessica Shea, means the First Reading will be revisted when the City Council meets in February.
