Charter school opening at former home of Jackson YMCA

Jackson Museum School, an innovative K–6 public charter school is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2026 – Kindergarten through second grade – adding one grade each year until full capacity.

The school will open in the former home of the Jackson YMCA, 1515 Campbell Street.

According to its website – jacksonmuseumschool.org – born from a grassroots movement of community members, parents, and local businesses, the school reflects a shared belief that ALL families deserve high quality educational options rooted in museum-based learning and equity.

Jackson Museum School envisions a dynamic learning community that leverages the unique power of the museum to ignite curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. We empower ALL students to explore the world through authentic experiences, cultivate a passion for literacy, and become engaged, responsible global citizens prepared to shape a better future.

ReCap Holdings, LLC, previously sold the property – a 45,000-square-foot building on 22 acres to Memphis-based Living Word Church – for $500,000.

Plans called for planting a church and a community youth outreach academy.
