Charles ‘Pepper’ Bray not seeking re-election to Jackson City Council

Charles ‘Pepper’ Bray didn’t have to be told it was time for someone else to serve as the Jackson City Council representative for District 6 – he knew the time had come.

“You need someone with new thoughts, new ideas,” Bray said, “We had some real good things to happen, but after after 20 years and five terms, that’s enough for anybody. When you lose some enthusiasm, it’s time for a change.”

Locals probably remember Bray when he was the men’s head basketball coach at then-Lambuth University from 1966 to 1985.

He would return to school and earn his doctorate, and later become the athletics director at Lambuth University.

Bray said he plans to remain visible around Jackson, but he will also spend more time with family and friends.

“I’ll keep an eye on the City, I like to read, I’ll drink coffee with my buddies, and I’m also in a prayer group,” Bray said, “But it’s the (City Council) memories … the only thing a person has is his memories … that’s what you have, and that’s what you carry with you.”

Bray’s announcement comes one day after fellow council member Randy Wallace announced he was not seeking re-election May 7.
