Milton Canovan, who works in fan relations with the Jackson Generals, has decided it’s time to round third and head for home.
“I’m 70 years old, and this is the fourth time I’ve retired,” Milt said, laughing, “I’m going to watch our three granddaughters play softball … that’s how I’m going to retire.”
Milt didn’t hesitate when asked what he will miss the most when he exits The Ballpark at Jackson, August 31.
“The people,” Milt said, “I get to greet the people when they come in, and I get to tell them goodbye as they leave.
“I enjoy baseball mostly, but it’s not a job. What kind of work is it when you are at a baseball game and you get to see people and talk to them and see them enjoy themselves?”
Milt worked as a sales representative in the chemical division for General Electric for 32 years.
Never too far from any game, locals recognize Milt from his days when he broadcast high school football on radio.
He will continue as a color commentator with EPlusTV 6 for the 2019 high school football season.
He and wife Kathy, have one child, Ben.
Even though he won’t be on staff with the Generals after this season, his plans are to continue to support the Southern League’s Double A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“This is special,” Milt said. “Jackson is one of 10 franchises in the Southern League. I love this place … it’s just time to move on.”
