The National Boy Scouts of America has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy – a realignment of assets due to pending lawsuits against the BSA, which have to do with sexual abuse cases.
According to Adrian Hackett, Scout Executive/CEO, Boy Scouts of America in Jackson – 1995 Hollywood Drive – the local West Tennessee Area Council is not involved in the bankruptcy.
“The West Tennessee Area Council has not filed for bankruptcy,” Hackett said, “Meetings and activities, district and council events, other Scouting adventures and countless service projects are taking place as usual. In short, there should be no change to the local Scouting experience.”
Hackett said the national organization of the Boy Scouts of America is the only entity involved in the Chapter 11 filing.
The West Tennessee Area Council – which provides programming, financial, facility and administrative support to local units and individual Scouts in our area – is separate and distinct from the national organization,” Hackett said, “Our camps, properties and all local contributions are controlled by our council.”
Again, the bankruptcy is a realignment of assets due to pending lawsuits against the BSA, which have to do with sexual abuse cases.
This is happening to achieve two key objectives: equitably compensate victims who were harmed during their time in Scouting and continue to carry out Scouting’s mission for years to come.
• Taking care of any person who was abused is BSA’s first priority.
• Each case is being handled with transparency and care, regardless of time frame. (Ninety percent of cases occurred prior to 1971)
• The West Tennessee Area Council is not filling bankruptcy and is financially independent from the National Boy Scouts of America. Therefore, Camp Mack Morris and any other assets that you and other volunteers have built are not at risk. While WTAC charters with the national organization, all West Tennessee financials and assets are separate.
• The WTAC is funded by your support, and donations remain in West Tennessee — helping fund Scouting in 20 area counties.
