Charles Lindbergh flew The Spirit of St. Louis across the Atlantic nonstop and solo, direct from New York City to Paris, in the first solo transatlantic flight.
The Holland Tunnel, under the Hudson River opened, connecting New York City with New Jersey, and work began on Mount Rushmore.
The year was 1927, the same year Epworth Hall was constructed on the campus of Lambuth College.
Located near the corner of Lambuth Boulevard and Maple Street, the aging facility is about to be demolished, after the Jackson-Madison County Historic Zoning Commission granted the University of Memphis Lambuth approval to remove Epworth Hall – a 1920s dormitory – which has not been used as a residence hall for 40-plus years and is in disrepair.
According to a press release, the structure should be razed by the end of the year.
Once the building has been removed, a garden area – or green space – is in the future plans for the property.
“Faculty, staff, students, alumni and the community are pleased to see the facility removed and replaced with a garden-like atmosphere that will add value and beauty to the neighborhood, which has already undergone extensive revitalization,” said Dr. Niles Reddick, vice provost of University of Memphis Lambuth.
Reddick said some of the bricks from the facility will be used for walkways in the area, and a marker will be placed denoting Epworth Hall.
