Herman Boone, best known as the head football coach at T. C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia – “Remember The Titans” – is the guest speaker when Sacred Heart of Jesus High School holds it annual scholarship banquet Tuesday.
101.5 FM held a question & answer session with Ann Keyl, principal at Sacred Heart about the banquet – 6 p.m. at Northside United Methodist Church, 2571 N Highland Ave.
Question: How did Sacred Heart of Jesus High School arrange for Herman Boone to be its guest speaker?
A: His message of character development and judging people by the content of their character aligned with our school’s vision.
Q: We would imagine the mere mention of the movie “Remember The Titans,” is helping fuel interest in the banquet.
A: Absolutely. Everybody from multiple generations have seen this movie. The message was still so poignant today with extreme feelings and judgement that the election brought out.
Q: Your thoughts on the visibility this annual event brings to Sacred Heart of Jesus High School overall?
A: It is a fundraiser for our entire school, and as a private school that does not receive federal funding we use this fundraiser to help keep our tuition affordable for all students.
Q: How many people are involved in getting this banquet pieced together?
A: The saying that it takes a village truly applies here. We have parents of alumni and current students and coaches and staff all pitching in together to make this happen.
Q: For those not quite familiar with Sacred Heart of Jesus High School, could you give a little information – enrollment, administration and staff, programs participating in athletics?
A: We are a co-ed college predatory high school. Our sports are sanctioned by TSSAA. We have grown 200 percent in the past four years, and we offer regular, honors, Advanced Placement and dual enrollment courses.
