Mobile Farmers Market Proposed

JACKSON, Tenn. – Could healthy food on wheels be a solution to unhealthy food choices?  Local NAACP health committee chair Flora Claybrook, thinks so.

Claybrook asked the city council to consider a “Mobile Farmers Market” funded by the city in what she described as an advocacy outreach effort. The Mobile Market would travel a route in East Jackson offering the residents healthy fruit and vegetable choices

. According to Claybrook Memphis has a similar project underway using a refurbished city bus called the “Green Machine”. According to Claybrook grocery stores in East Jackson are less accessible to the residents than unhealthy food options, and her informal survey of those stores suggested either high prices or a lack of quality produce.

Claybrook cited the state’s health relative to the rest of the nation among African-Americans. and said her committee is trying to initiate efforts that support education, fitness, healthy eating, and lifestyle changes.
