Protesters Gather at Presley’s Home, 4 Detained

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Dozens of protesters associated with the Black Lives Matter movement who had been gathered in front of Elvis Presley’s home in Memphis are moving to another location south of the attraction.

Police say four people have been detained. Police have been directing traffic in temperatures higher than 90 degrees and trying to prevent people from blocking the street at one of the most popular tourist destinations in the U.S.

About 70 protesters shouted and carried signs, some of which read “Black Lives Matter” and “Memphis Poorest City.”

Community activist Joe Hunter said protesters chose Graceland because it’s a prominent tourist attraction that draws money into the city.

The protesters eventually split up into groups of 20 or fewer to comply with ordinances requiring permits for gatherings of more than 25 people.

Graceland officials didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
