Mysteries of Lightning Bugs Will Be in Spotlight at Program

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) — If you’ve ever wondered what makes a lightning bug glow, the Manhattan Project National Historical Park has a program for you.

The park will present “The Mysterious World of Lightning Bugs” from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. June 16 at the University of Tennessee Arboretum in Oak Ridge.

The program will cover the firefly’s life cycle, what makes it glow, different species in the area, how to identify fireflies by their flashes and how they’ve been used in the military in the past and in current scientific research.

Weather permitting, the program will move outside so that participants will be able to observe fireflies.
