From the Covington Police Department –
On 10 July 2023 at approximately 7:20 p.m., Covington Police Department (CPD) Officers received a license plate reader notification of a stolen vehicle.
CPD Officers searched the area and located the vehicle in the parking lot of Mapco in Covington, TN.
Officers initiated a traffic stop where the two (2) suspects tried to flee the scene. The driver was identified as a 17-year-old male juvenile from Memphis and a 16-year-old male passenger from Jackson.
The car had been reported stolen in Jackson, TN on 10 July 2023.
Both juveniles were cited to the Tipton County Juvenile Court and released to their parents. The Covington Police Department worked closely with Madison County Sheriff’s Office officials. During the investigation, detectives recovered evidence that the driver of the stolen vehicle and two (2) other suspects were involved in the shooting at Broadmeadows on 08 July 2023.
After examining evidence from the shooting on 08 July 2023 at the Broadmeadows apartment complex, the 17-year-old juvenile from the auto theft investigation were identified along with another 17-year-old juvenile. CPD detectives located both juveniles and transported them along with their parents to the Criminal Investigation Division for questioning.
Both juveniles admitted to their roles in the shooting on 08 July 2023. After several leads and the statements made by the juveniles, the third male suspect was located and brought in for questioning.
Thomas Williams, 26, Covington, TN admitted to his role in the shooting at Broadmeadows. In addition, detectives recovered weapons and ammunition from these cases. Williams was transported to the Tipton County Jail and charged with reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The juvenile involved in the auto theft and the shooting was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, reckless endangerment, juvenile in possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
The other juvenile involved in the shooting was charged with facilitation of a felony and juvenile in possession of a firearm. Due to the severity of the crime, both juveniles were transported to the Dyersburg “Serving – Protecting- Caring” Juvenile Facility and will be transported back to the Tipton County Juvenile Court on 14 July 2023.
Williams is slated to appear in court on 29 August 2023 and a bond set at $10,000. “This is an example of great police work with the patrol division in locating the stolen vehicle,” said Chief Donna Turner. “I commend the detectives who not only investigated the stolen vehicle incident, but because of the thorough investigation it exposed other crimes that the trio are allegedly involved in.”
