Ernest Brooks II resigns City Council seat; takes position with Shelby County District Attorney’s Office

Ernest Brooks II, Jackson City Councilman District 3 has resigned and has taken a position with the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office in Memphis.

From the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office –

I would like to congratulate Ernest Brooks II and Melanie Headley on their swearing-in this morning by Judge Lee V. Coffee. Mr. Brooks will serve as Associate Deputy District Attorney and Senior Policy Advisor, and Mrs. Headley as Assistant District Attorney in the Crime Strategies and Narcotics Prosecution Unit. These attorneys represent a wide breadth of professional experience. Together, they bring our office closer to better representing the full diversity of our community.

Resumes will be accepted to fill the position vacated by Brooks, and the Jackson City Council will select a new council member.

In accordance with the Charter of the City of Jackson, TN, “A vacancy in the office of a council member shall be filled by appointment of a qualified resident of that district by a two-thirds (2/3) majority vote of those who are present and voting.

“All persons appointed to fill vacancies in accordance with the provisions of this section, except the mayor, shall serve until the next regularly scheduled municipal election. The election to fill a vacancy shall be held in accordance with the provisions for a regular council seat.”
