The Pittsburgh Steelers have acquired linebacker Avery Williamson – a native of Milan – and a 2020 seventh-round pick from the New York Jets in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round pick. The veteran moves from the NFL’s lone win-less team to the league’s lone undefeated team; a total reversal of fortunes overnight.
Williamson, a fifth-round pick out of Kentucky in 2014, began his career with the Tennessee Titans before signing a lucrative long-term contract with New York in 2018. He missed the entire 2019 season with a torn ACL but has rebounded strongly in 2020. The 28-year old has recorded 59 tackles, one interception and three pass deflections in seven games. He is in the final year of his contract.
Pittsburgh had been looking to replace linebacker Devin Bush, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 6 against the Browns. The Steelers are currently 7-0 after defeating AFC North rival Baltimore Sunday.
