School board discusses plans for new school buildings

During the June Jackson-Madison County School board meeting the concerns
of most interest were around the future of new school buildings for the
district.

Supt Ray Washington announced that the groundbreaking for the new
JCM and the new Madison academic will be June 26. He also told the board
members that at next months meeting representatives from Healthy
Communities LLC would be present to answer questions.
The future for the new K8 in the northwest corner of the district is not
as certain. After years of discussions, postponements, and other delays a
groundbreaking date for the Schools that will replace pope elementary is
still unknown.

The district does own sufficient property for the proposed
school and at last night’s board meeting members approved a construction
agreement and contract for a construction manager. It will now be up to the
board to work out funding with the County commission.

And looking ahead at the school calendar it is still uncertain when public
schools will reopen and what that will look like when they do, but incoming
superintendent Dr. Marlon King says that it is unlikely that it will be the
August 3 date currently on the school calendar.
