College soccer – USJ’s Sam Newman signs with Union University

Sam Newman made the most of his two-year soccer career at the University School of Jackson.

Newman began playing with the Bruins as an eighth-grader, but injuries curtailed two seasons and the Coronavirus pandemic eliminated his senior season.

He had 90 career points on 33 goals and 24 assists.

His 90 career points puts him at 11th all-time in points in school history.

Newman was named to the All West Tennessee Tournament Team in 2018, and won Tennessee State titles with the Division One Lobos, and Division Two Wolves.

He also represented Tennessee in the Olympic Development Program in 2002, and was selected to the USYS Region III 2002 Pool Team.

“Sam is easily one of the best players to come out of West Tennessee,” said Paul Conway, USJ’s head soccer coach, “It’s great to see this area producing players of this caliber and know we’ll have a top local talent representing the (Union University) Bulldogs.”

Conway said Newman runs with the ball very well, while moving past players and possesses a great eye for the goal.

“To see the way he’s battled back from two ACL surgeries says much about the character of the lad,” Conway said, “Sam has sacrificed so much to get to this level. I’ve no doubt the sacrifice will pay off with a great college career.

“Union is getting a great player but an even better person. USJ is very proud and happy for Sam and his family!”
