JACKSON, Tenn. (June 2, 2015) – The Jackson City Beer Board discussed a proposed new ordinance at Tuesday morning’s meeting.
Members expressed concerns that beer licenses can be granted to businesses that are in close proximity to churches and daycare centers
There have been several complaints from pastors and others about the lack of a strict policy.
The proposal members are considering would restrict businesses within 2,000 feet of a school, church or a licensed daycare facility from being eligible for a beer license.
Beer Board considering new ordinance
If passed, current beer licenses would not be affected. Businesses that already have permits would be grandfathered in, any businesses that apply from there on out would have to comply.
The committee plans on presenting the proposed ordinace to the city council at the July meeting.
The proposal will need to be approved on two readings to take effect.
In other action at their Tuesday morning meeting at City Hall Beer Board approved licenses for beer sales for three businesses.
Narendrakumar B. Patel was approved for a business known as AB Trinity Food Market, located at 1586 North Parkway
Kailas Patel was approved for a business known as Airways Mini Mart located at 586 Airways Boulevard
Adil Ismael Ahmed was approved for a business known as F-Best Market, located at 794 West Forest Avenue,
City council approves $800 thousand  in write-offs
At Tuesday’s meeting the city council approved more than $800,000 in write-offs for unpaid fees and taxes .
75 percent of the write-offs come from unpaid city court fees, according to city officials.
