Memphis Fire Official: Gas Leaked After Train Car Derailed

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Memphis Fire Department says several thousand gallons of gasoline have leaked from a tank car that derailed.

Fire department spokesman Wayne A. Cooke said in a news release Monday night that that the leaking BNSF Railway tank car was among seven that derailed around 7:15 a.m. as a train was attempting to enter a rail yard. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the derailment.

Cooke says fire crews confined the leak and BNSF crews uprighted the damaged car and offloaded the remaining fuel.

There were no injuries.

His statement said the several thousand gallons that leaked present no immediate hazard to the public. Cooke told The Commercial Appeal that the fuel was contained and did not enter the sewer system.
