Union University Director of Athletics Tommy Sadler has named Jim Pitt as the new head coach for the baseball program.
According to a press release, Pitt takes over after Lee Driggers retired from coaching in May.
“We are very excited to have Jim Pitt come as our new head baseball coach,” Sadler said, “He is an outstanding coach, and will serve as a great role model to our baseball student-athletes.”
Pitt thanked President Samuel W. Oliver, Director of Athletics Tommy Sadler, and the hiring committee for entrusting him to be the head baseball coach at Union University.
“I am incredibly honored and humbled to be able to lead young men spiritually, academically and athletically,” Pitt said, “My wife and I believe strongly through prayer that the Lord has led us to Union University, and we are excited to continue to share our passion for Christ and serve students through the platform of athletics. I am excited to get started.”
Pitt came to Union from the University of Pikeville where he spent the past eight seasons, the last four as head coach. In his four years as head coach, Pitt went 103-97 and became one of the winningest coaches in program history in that short time. He coached 19 all-conference players and 53 scholar-athlete award winners.
In 2019, Pitt earned the Mid-South Conference Coaching for Significance Award and was the 2016 Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year. He was the first Pikeville baseball coach to earn Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year honors. In 2018, Pitt’s team earned the highest male team GPA at Pikeville. Prior to his time at Pikeville, Pitt was the graduate assistant at Waldorf College.
Pitt graduated from Waldorf College with a bachelors degree in health and physical education. He earned his MBA degree in sports management in 2011.
Pitt played two years of college baseball at Waldorf where he was named Midwest Collegiate Conference All-Conference.
He played his freshman and sophomore seasons at Iowa Central Community College where he helped lead his team to back-to-back Junior College World Series appearances in 2003-04. In his team’s 2003 runner-up finish, Pitt was named to the World Series All-Tournament team and set the World Series slugging percentage record. After his two years at ICCC, he received a scholarship to Lipscomb University.
Pitt is a graduate of Irondale High in Minnesota where he was an all-state baseball player. He is married to Erica and is the son of Bill and Nancy Pitt.
