Nerdvana celebrates Free Comic Book Day, Saturday

Free Comic Book Day, held the first Saturday in May, is a single day when participating comic book specialty shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops.

101.5 FM & WNWS.COM visited with Tracie Simer, who co-owns Nerdvana, 1923 Emporium Drive, to discuss the event from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday.

Question: When did this event begin?

Answer: The first Free Comic Book Day event was held in 2002. In the past, thousands of shops around the world have given away millions of free comic books to interested readers. We’re proud of the continuing success of Free Comic Book Day and look forward to growing the event each year.

Question: Are the comic books really free?

Answer: Yes. Different shops have policies on how many free comics you can receive, but you will receive at least one free comic book if you enter a participating shop location.

Question: How did organizers get everyone on the same page?

Answer: Free Comic Book Day is administered by a panel representing all parts of the comic book industry: retailers, publishers, suppliers, and Diamond Comic Distributors. Each year, publishers apply to provide comic books at cost to retailers, who in turn give them away for free. Diamond handles marketing and logistics for the event, shipping comics to shops and handling marketing and public relations for the event.

Question: How do comic books maintain their popularity?

Answer: Comic books are an original American art form, created in the early days of the Twentieth Century. They are fun to read, featuring a wide range of diverse story lines that capture the imagination of the readers. That’s worth celebrating in our book – we’re proud to be a part of this wonderful medium.

Not to mention the recent success of comic book movies — from last year’s Wonder Woman and Thor: Ragnarok to Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War — means comic book stories are popular.

Question: Which comics are available?

Answer: Each year, the comics offered change. Past comics have included Archie, the Avengers, Doctor Who and more.

Question: Can I grab any comic I want?

Answer: Nerdvana will be giving away special comics written and distributed specifically for the event. The store will also have some deals on back issue comics for the day. Come by and check out what’s available.

Visit www.FreeComicBookDay.com to launch a shop locator service that will show you participating retailers in your area.
