Freddie Garrett receiving Distinguished Service Award during Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame

The announcement caught Freddie Garrett off-guard, when he was first told he would be the recipient of the 2018 Billy Schrivner Distinguished Service Award, when the 33rd annual Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame is held at 6:30 p.m., at the Carl Perkins Civic Center, April 19.

“When I first heard I (was) receiving the Distinguished Service Award, it was kind of shocking,” Freddie said. “There’s certainly a lot of people in Jackson Madison county that deserve it, but I’m excited to get it.”

Freddie, who has been involved in athletics in Jackson and Madison County since 1985.

His service includes working as a TSSAA High School and Junior College basketball official for 15 years, and a TSSAA High School baseball umpire for five years.

Freddie has umpired in Jackson-Madison County baseball organizations – Dixie Youth, Jackson Little League and Senior Little League.

He has been a member of the scores table crew at Union University basketball games for about 20 years – public address announcer, shot clock operator, game clock.

He was a member of the scorers table crew at the NAIA National Women’s Basketball Tournament, when the event was held in Jackson.

Freddie has also worked as a scorekeeper at the West Tennessee Healthcare Sportsplex for baseball and softball, and the Jackson Parks and Recreation Church League Basketball, and as a member of the chain crew for Lane College football games.

An active member at First Baptist Church in Bemis, Freddie has four children – Michele (Brian) Walker, Clagett (Jana) Talley, Lee (Anna Mae) Garrett and Lela (John) Canter.

He also has eight grandchildren – Ben, Sarah, Jason, Trey, Savanna, Abram, Bobby and Samuel.

Freddie will receive the Distinguished Service Award during a luncheon at 11:30 a.m., at the Jackson Country Club, April 19, and recognition at the Hall of Fame banquet, when Ivy Renfroe, Brian Dunn, Ryan Scott, Jodie Parrish and Liberty ‘Libby’ Cash are inducted.

Former NFL and UT star Trey Teague, who was inducted into the 2008 Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame, will be the banquet’s speaker.
