Woman found in ditch in Haywood County dies; suspect charged with First Degree murder

Ebony Fields, the woman found badly beaten near Stanton, has died.

Haywood County Sheriff Billy Garrett said charges placed against Mark Anthony Springfield in the case have escalated to First Degree murder.

Fields, still in her pajamas, was dumped in a ditch across the road from her home at 12691 Highway 70 West, just outside of the Stanton city limits, Sunday.

Her age was not immediately available.

EMS and deputies were called to the scene about 8:30 a.m., Sunday, where they found her suffering massive head trauma. She was only semi-conscious. She was flown to the Med in Memphis.

Sheriff Garrett reported that Fields died Monday night.

Springfield, 50, turned himself in Sunday night and is in the Haywood County Jail. The sheriff did not say what led to the incident, only that Springfield was living with Fields, and also has a Fayette County address.
