With few breakouts or Oscar pics, the Sundance market cools

The Sundance Film Festival last year premiered two of this year’s best picture nominees in “Get Out” and “Call Me By Your Name.” But this year the annual festival in Park City, Utah, draws to a close Sunday with no clear breakouts and few big deals in place.

One of the biggest acquisitions of the festival wasn’t even from a traditional studio. HBO Films acquired the film “The Tale,” which stars Laura Dern as a woman who was sexually abused when she was 13, for $7 million. It will not be released in theaters.

Previous big spender like Fox Searchlight, Amazon Studios and Netflix were quieter than in years past too, signaling to some that Sundance might not be as robust a marketplace as it once was.
