(December 2, 2014) MADISON County, — Former Madison County Sheriffs Deputy is indicted on Prescription Drug Fraud Charges


On Monday the Madison County Grand Jury handed down a true bill charging former MCSD Lieutenant Jerry Elston with 52 counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, according to Sheriff John Mehr.
According to Sheriff Mehr, Jerry Elston turned himself in at the Criminal Justice Complex today.
Elston is represented by attorney Mark Donahoe. He is free on $2500.00 bond.
Elston will be formally arraigned Monday in Madison County Circuit Court Division II

November 1998:Â Promoted to Lieutenant
December 2007:Â Promoted to Captain
October 2009: Resigned from the Sheriff’s Department
October 2009 through September 2010 he worked for Civilian Police International, L.L.C. As an employee of CPI he supported a U.S. government contract in Iraq. He was the Deputy for Judicial Security in charge of all other Judicial and Security Advisors.
November 2010: Hired as a Madison County Deputy
January 2011 Promoted to Sergeant
September 2011: Promoted to Lieutenant/Executive Assistant
October 2014: Jerry Elston retired from Madison County Sheriff’s Department
About Jerry Elston, Elston is a lifelong resident of Madison County. After graduating from South Side High School, he attended Jackson State Community College and Union University.
He began his law enforcement career in 1972 as a patrolman with the Jackson Police Department and eventually became one of the first pilots in JPD’s newly formed aviation unit in 1974.
He graduated from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy and continued with JPD until 1977. At that time he chose to enter the private sector with General Motors Acceptance Corporation. In 1978, while still with GM, he accepted a part time position with the Sheriff’s Office and maintained that relationship until the closing of GMAC’s Jackson office in 1995 at which time he came back to the Sheriff’s Office on a full time basis.
He spent most of his time in Patrol Division, promoted first to Sergeant in 1996 and assigned as second in command of the afternoon shift. In 1998 he was promoted to Lieutenant and given the supervisory responsibility of the day shift patrol unit. In 2003 he became the Administrative Lieutenant responsible for fleet management, certain personnel issues, and the department’s primary co-coordinator with the Department of Homeland Security and represents the Sheriff’s Office on the FBI’s Terrorism Work Group.
In December 2007 he was promoted to Captain of the Criminal Investigation Division responsible for and overseeing all investigations.
His training includes the Academy as well as graduating from the University of North Florida’s Institute of Police Technology and Management in Jacksonville, Florida and the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Emergency Management Institute in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
He is recognized by the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission as an instructor in several disciplines and is a member of the adjunct faculty at the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy teaching courses in Officer Survival, Crime Scene Technology and Management, all phases of Traffic crash investigation and reconstruction, Dignitary Protection, and National Incident Management Systems to name a few.
