Colorado Rockies top pitching prospect Ryan Rolison will miss some time after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix following a case of appendicitis.
Rockies manager Bud Black made the announcement about Rolison at the end of his press conference with the media, including Rox Pile, prior to Colorado opening a three-game series in Miami against the Marlins.
“He’ll be shelved for the time being,” Black said. “I’m not sure exactly how long that will be. I’ve heard anywhere from a month to five or six weeks before he’s back and pitching competitively in Albuquerque (Colorado’s Triple-A home).
“He’ll be on the injured list there in Triple-A.”
What does this mean for the Colorado Rockies pitching prospect?
The news is a stunning blow as Rolison was promoted to Triple-A last month and seemed to be on the fast track to make his MLB debut later this season. While that is still possible, the surgery could set the timeline back a bit for the 23-year-old southpaw.
Colorado selected Rolison out of the University of Mississippi with the 22nd overall pick in the 2018 MLB draft. This season, he’s posted a 3-1 mark with a 3.67 ERA in six combined starts between Double-A Hartford and Triple-A Albuquerque.
At Triple-A, Rolison has a 1-0 mark and 4.38 ERA, allowing 11 hits in 12.1 innings pitched.
