DAVIE, Fla. – Union University’s JJ Zimmer posted a final round 70 (1-under par) in the 2023 NCAA D2 Super Region Championships as a part of the NCAA D2 Nationals.
According to a press release from Steven Aldridge – Union’s Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Communication – this was the last of three rounds and will conclude the season for Zimmer.
Zimmer’s 70 in the final round moved him up to a tie for 16th place, up five spots from his second-round place of T21. He improved in each of the three rounds, starting the event in T38 after the first round.
He was consistent with a par 71 in both the first and second rounds and finishing with a 70. He was one of only six golfers in the field of 108 players to post scores of par or better in all three rounds.
Zimmer finished 1-under for the event, just eight shots off the medalist, Andrew Riley (Palm Beach Atlantic) at 9-under. West Florida’s Felipe Garces Garzon was second with a 7-under finish.
Zimmer, a 5-foot-11 sophomore from Jackson, Tennessee, played as an individual. He is the first Union golfer to play in the NCAA D2 Nationals since Union’s return to NCAA play in 2012-13. Zimmer qualified as an individual last season but did not play due to an injury.
Zimmer is the No. 14-ranked individual among all golfers at the NCAA D2 level. He finished top-5 or better in eight of his nine events on the season. He posted two first-place finishes, including medalist honors at the Tunica Cup and the Hillcat Classic.
He finished fourth at the Gulf South Conference Championships. Entering the nationals, Zimmer played in nine tournaments, 26 rounds, and posted a scoring average of 71.19. He helped Union to its highest NCAA National Ranking of No. 41.
