Union’s Dillard named GSC Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week

BIRIMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference named Union University’s Bethany Dillard as this week’s women’s basketball freshman of the week. This is Dillard’s first GSC weekly honor of her career and third this season for Union.

Dillard, a 5-foot-10 guard from Maumelle, Ark., had a big week for the conference’s top team with an average of 21.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, two steals and one assist in Union’s two wins. The freshman guard dropped a career-high 27 points on the strength of 8-for-11 from three-point land while adding five rebounds in a road win against Christian Brothers.

She finished with 16 points on 6-of-10 from the field and four rebounds in the Bulldogs’ convincing win over West Alabama on Feb. 19.

Regional Basketball Rankings: Union women remain No. 1, men up to No. 6

JACKSON, Tenn. – The NCAA Region Committee’s released the second of four basketball regional rankings across the eight division II regions. Union University was listed in both the men’s and the women’s poll for the second straight week.

The Union women earned the No. 1 spot in this week’s poll, while the Union men are up one spot to No. 6 this week. The region rankings will be released each Wednesday in the late afternoon through conference tournament week with the final release being announced as a part of the selection show, late evening, Sunday, March 6.

The Union women have advanced to the regional round of the national tournament six of the seven years it has been in the Gulf South Conference. Union has one region title in 2018, advancing to the Elite Eight round of the national tournament.

The Union men have been to the NCAA D2 National Tournament four times, two of those in the most recent NCAA membership stint in 2015 and 2016. The previous trips came in 1967 and 1968. Union was runner-up to the eventual NCAA D2 national champion, Kentucky Wesleyan, in the 1968 region tournament title game.

Union men’s golf earns sixth place in spring opener

ROBINSONVILLE, Miss. – The Union University men’s golf team posted a sixth-place finish at the Tunica Cup hosted by Union and Christian Brothers University. The two-round event was played at the Tunica National Golf and Tennis Club and featured eight teams 41 golfers.

Union shot 299 in the first round and 313 in the second round for a 612. Harding won the event in a playoff over Christian Brothers with scores of 584. Missiouri St. Louis finished third, Wisconsin-Parkside fourth, Mississippi College fifth, LeMoyne Owen seventh, and Delta State did not finish.

JJ Zimmer posted a top-10 with a T9 finish (71, 75-146). Christian Brothers’ Caleb Bopp won the event with a 68, 74-142.

Timothy Pinkston finished T18 (70, 81-151), Gray Campbell finished T24 (76, 78-154), Trey Tidwell finished 33rd (81, 79-161), and Anders Rider finished 41st (0, 86-86).

Logan Montgomery played as an individual and finished T26 (78, 77-155).

Union women’s golf opens fall with fifth place finish

ROBINSONVILLE, Miss. – The Union University women’s golf team posted a fifth place finish in the Tunica Cup hosted by Union and Christian Brothers University. The two-round event was played at the Tunica National Golf and Tennis Club and featured six teams with 37 golfers.

The third round was canceled due to rain.

Union shot a 635 in the two rounds, firing a 312 in round one and 323 in round two. Central Oklahoma won the event with a 607 (302, 305). Central Missouri finished second, Harding third, Christian Brothers fourth, and Arkansas Monticello sixth.

Aubrey Cagle and Emma Korte led Union with T8 finishes. Cagle shot a 77, 78-155, while Emma Korte shot 74, 81-155. Central Oklahoma’s Susana Olivares won the event with a 73, 70-143.

Kallie Robertson finished T12 with a 77, 79-156, Nicole Taylor finished T28 with an 84, 85-169, and Mckinnley Korte finished 33rd with an 85, 94-179.

Cecilly Berry and Karlie Alexander played as individuals. Berry finished 30th with an 82, 88-170 and Alexander finished 36th with an 82 in round two, not scoring in round one.
