Union University athletics – men’s & women’s basketball splits with CBU; GSC honors 2 Bulldogs

No. 5 Union extends streak to 17 with 20th win of the season

The Union University women’s basketball team posted a 75-63 win at Christian Brothers University. Union improved to 20-2 on the season and a league best 15-0 in the Gulf South Conference.

Christian Brothers dropped to 8-16 overall and 7-11 in league play. Union is ranked No. 5 nationally in both the WBCA Coaches’ Poll and the D2SIDA Media Poll. Union is also ranked No. 1 in this week’s NCAA Region Rankings.

The win for Union pushed its winning streak to 17 straight and also marked win No. 20 on the season.

In the win at Christian Brothers, freshman Bethany Dillard posted her career high to lead all scorers.

She poured in 27 points and was 9-of-13 from the field, including 8-of-11 from 3-point range. Union was led by Dillard’s 27 points. Williams added 19 points and led with nine rebounds, missing her third straight double-double by one rebound. Beard finished with 12 points.

Union shot 44 percent from the field, 46 percent (12-26) from long range, and 75 percent (9-12) from the free throw line.

Up next for Union will be its final regular season home game, Saturday, February 19 at 2 p.m., versus West Alabama.

Union Men’s basketball falls for the first time in GSC play

The Union University men’s basketball team lost 74-69 at Christian Brothers University.

Union dropped to 19-6 on the season and 13-4 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers improved to 9-15 overall and 6-12 in league play.

The loss marked the first defeat for Union in a GSC road game this season (7-1). It also marked the first time all season that Union has not been in first place or tied for first.

Union dropped to second place after the loss, just one game behind Union’s next opponent, West Alabama. Union dominated the first half. Union led 42-25 at the break for its largest lead of the night.

Union shot 53 percent from the field and 64 percent from 3-point range in the first half. Christian Brothers dominated the second half, outscoring Union 49-27, shooting a blistering 66 percent from the field and 33 percent (2-6) from long range.

Union was led by Tylandrius Parks and Boe Nguidjol with 17 points each. Tyree Boykin added 13 points. Both Boykin and Parks hit three 3-pointers each. Union shot 50 percent from the field, 50 percent (10-20) from 3-point range, and just 36 percent (5-14) from the free throw line.

Christian Brothers was led by Aiden Ruthsatz with 17 points. Nick Deifel added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Daniel Loos scored 13 points and Christian Jones added 12 points. Up next for Union will be its final regular season home game, Saturday, February 19 at 4 p.m., versus West Alabama

Union Baseball- Union’s Swanson named GSC and NCBWA South Region Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Union University’s Grayson Swanson was named the Gulf South Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the week ending February 13, 2022. He was also tabbed as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA) South Region Player of the Week.

This is Swanson’s first weekly award of the season and first for Union. Swanson, a native of Greeley, Colorado and transfer from Oklahoma Christian, had a monster weekend going 10-for-17 (.588) at the plate with 12 RBI, while helping Union to a four-game sweep over West Liberty.

The junior outfielder opened the series with two doubles, a triple, and a single. Union is 4-3 and opens GSC play this weekend at home versus No. 21 Lee University

Union’s Williams named GSC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Union University’s Jaelencia Williams was named the Gulf South Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week for the week ending February 3, 2022, her second Player of the Week award of the year.

Williams, a 6-foot-2 senior from Indianapolis, Indiana, averaged a double-double as she led nationally-ranked Union to a 3-0 week, and helped the Bulldogs stretch their winning streak to 16 games.
