Union men’s golf takes fourth at Bulldog Spring Bash
ATHENS, Ala. – The Union University men’s golf team posted a fourth-place finish at the Spring Bulldog Bash, hosted by Union. The event took place at the Canebrake Golf Club in Athens, Alabama, and featured eight teams with 46 golfers.
Union shot a first-round 290, the best score of the second round with a 282, and then a final round of 292 for an 864 (E) for the tournament. Shorter won the event with an 846 (-18). Christian Brothers and Montevallo tied for second with 852 (-12). Mississippi College was fifth, Spring Hill sixth, and Delta State and UT Southern tied for seventh.
Union had two guys in the top 10. JJ Zimmer was named All-Tournament with a fifth-place finish with 211, -5 (71, 68, 72). Jackson Hughey posted his best college tournament finish with a T10 214, -2 (74, 70, 70). Jean Loui du Plessis of Shorter won the event with a 207 (-9).
Trey Tidwell finished T14 with a 215 (73, 72, 70), Timothy Pinkston T17 with a 216 (75, 67, 74), Gray Campbell T33 with a 224 (73, 75, 76), Blake Wolfe 36th with a 226 (73, 75, 78), Kip Patterson 43rd with a 236 (78, 78, 80), Will Brown T44 with a 237 (76, 81, 80), and Blake Templeton T46 with a 242 (82, 80, 80). Hughey, Patterson, Brown, and Templeton each played as individuals.
This was the final regular season match for the men’s team. Up next is the GSC Championships April 16-18 in Mobile, Alabama at the RTJ Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove.
Union women’s golf places fifth at Spring Bulldog Bash
ATHENS, Ala. – The Union University women’s golf team posted a fifth-place finish at their own Spring Bulldog Bash. The event took place at the Canebrake Golf Club in Athens, Alabama, and featured six teams with 32 individuals.
Union shot 316 in the first round, 316 in the second round, and then 318 in Tuesday’s final round for a total of 951, +87. The University of Montevallo won the event with an 893, +29 (307, 292, 294). Shorter was second, UT Southern third, Christian Brothers fourth, and Spring Hill sixth).
Union freshman Frookly Verdugo posted a top-10 finish in eighth place. She shot 230, +14 (76, 76, 78). Madison Rincon of Montevallo won the event with a 209, -7.
Aubrie Cagle finished 18th at 238 (75, 81, 82), Kallie Robertson T22 with a 242 (84, 82, 76), Nicole Taylor T22 with a 242 (81, 78, 83), Cecily Berry 29th with a 246 (81, 83, 82), Karlie Alexander 30th with a 249 (85, 82, 82), and McKinnley Korte 31st with a 250 (83, 81, 86). Berry and Korte played the event as individuals.
Up next for Union will be the last regular season tournament of the year with a trip to Pensacola, Fla. to play in the West Florida Argonaut Invitational April 3-4.
Union baseball falls to Arkansas Monticello in non-conference matchup
JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team lost a non-conference matchup at home against the University of Arkansas Monticello Tuesday afternoon, 10-3. Union moved to 9-21 overall on the season and Arkansas Monticello improved to 18-12 on the season.
Arkansas Monticello jumped out to an early lead in the second inning as their Parker Dorrance on a ground ball by Alex Austin. They continued their momentum in the fourth inning, scoring two more runs. In the top half of the sixth inning, Arkansas Monticello scored four runs, the most in any inning. Union started to chip away at the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Mitch Sisk scored on a single by Grant Ross. Union rallied in the bottom of the ninth but came up short resulting in a final score of 10-3.
Eli Snelson led Union going 2-for-2. Ross (0-1) started on the mound for the Bulldogs. He threw three innings, giving up three runs on one hit, and striking out three. Four other bulldogs threw in relief.
Up next for Union is a non-conference matchup against Lane College Dragons. This game will be played at the Ballpark at Jackson and is set to take place on April, 4 at 6 p.m.
