Union SAAC earns Make-A-Wish reveal, grants wish on campus during basketball game

The Union University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) earned an on-campus reveal for Make-A-Wish Foundation, the official foundation for NCAA SAAC.

According to a press release, Union raised $8,500 in 2017-18, which was the 12th highest dollar amount among all of NCAA Division II schools and was second in the Gulf South Conference.

By being in the top-20 in the NCAA D2 ranks, Union earned a Make-A-Wish reveal on campus. This is the second time since joining the NCAA that Union’s SAAC has earned an on-campus reveal.

Union joined with Make-A-Wish Mid-South to grant a wish to a young boy named Lucas.

Lucas was surprised when his wish of a Disney Cruise was granted at halftime of Union University basketball game. Union SAAC president Kristen Pickens, a softball player at Union, said, “Our Student-Athlete Advisory Committeewas so excited to be able to grant Lucas’ wish! We have worked hard as an athletic department to raise money for this cause, and to see his smiling face and his happy family allowed us to embrace the true spirit of Bulldog Athletics.”

Since joining with Make-A-Wish, Division II has raised nearly $6 million toward granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Almost 700 “wishes” have been granted through Division II contributions. These wishes can serve as a game changer in children’s fights against their illnesses, helping them feel better, and in some cases even get better.

As part of their partnership with Make-A-Wish, Division II schools raised more than $474,000 for the nonprofit organization during the 2017-18 academic year. Since the national Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee began its relationship with Make-A-Wish in 2003, the division has raised more than $5.7 million, helping the organization grant wishes to 697 kids across the country with life-threatening medical conditions.
