The Union University women’s basketball team earned the 2-seed in the NCAA Division II National Tournament South Regional.
The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Lakeland, Fla. where host Florida Southern College will be the No. 1 seed. Union opens the region round against 7-seed Nova Southeastern, Friday.
According to a press release, this is Union’s fourth trip to the NCAA National Tournament – the previous three times were as a No. 1 seed and region host. Union is one of three Gulf South Conference schools to make the 8-team region tournament. No. 4 seed Lee and No. 5 seed West Florida join Union in tournament. Union (2018) and West Florida (2017) are the last two region tournament champions.
The game with Nova Southeastern will be a rematch from the second game of this season when Union won 76-60 in the South Region Crossover Classic. Union is 4-1 all-time versus Nova Southeastern, including three straight wins. Union’s only loss to Nova Southeastern was a region tournament championship match up at Union in 2015 when 2-seed NSU edged top-seeded Union 67-62 in Union’s first NCAA postseason appearance.
Union finished the 2018-19 regular season with a 26-2 record, matching the best season for Union since joining NCAA D2 in 2012-13 (Union was also 26-2 in 2015-16). Union won the GSC Regular Season Title for the second straight season and fifth time since joining the league. Union is currently 27-3 after going 1-1 in the GSC Tournament.
Nova Southeastern is 18-11 on the season and are one of four Sunshine State Conference schools to make the 8-team region. Fellow Jackson foe Lane College is making its program’s first appearance in the region tournament as the SIAC Tournament Champion.
