Union University will induct six new members into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame, when ceremonies are held at 6:30 p.m., April 12, at the Carl Grant Events Center.
According to a press release, inductees are Ron Baker, Lynde Capogreco, Mario Cobo, Dave Gray, Karen McWherter, and Wilfredo ‘Cano’ Velez.
Ron Baker (1966) was a three-sport athlete while at Union in cross country, track and field, and golf, and was a conference champion and record holder in track and field.
Lynde Capogreco (1999) was a four-year starter for the Union softball team – the first four years in program history.
She was a two-time All-American and region pitcher of the year, and continues to hold several pitching records.
Mario Cobo (1999) played four years of tennis for Union where he was a two-time All-America.
Dave Gray (1968) played men’s basketball for Union during the first era of NCAA Division II basketball, and was a member of the team that played for a region title in 1968.
Karen McWherter (1981) played tennis for Union and was a member of the inaugural season.
‘Cano’ Velez (1988) was a two-time All-American in baseball before leading his home country, Puerto Rico, to a third-place finish in the Olympics.
