TSSAA Division I Class 4A Region 7 Preview
Region 7 is squarely a two-team race going in to the 2022 season, with that being the powerhouses of Haywood and South Gibson.
Haywood
Chris Smith, Head Coach
2021 Record (13-1 Overall, 5-0 District)
Preview: Dominance is once again Haywood’s answer to the 2021 football season. The Tomcats look for the wins to continue well into this season. An absolutely suffocating offensive attack and smothering defense describes the Cats, and hopefully will for years to come.
South Gibson County
Ben Johnson, Head Coach
2021 Record (!0-4 Overall, 3-2 District)
Preview: Overall, the Hornets had a very successful 2021 season on the gridiron. A respectable 24.8 points a game gave South Gibson County a steady output on offense. However, if there was one thing the Hornets will certainly look to improve – the defense, which gave up 20.8 points a game last year.
Crockett County
Kevin Ward, Head Coach
2021 Record (1-9 Overall, 0-5 District)
Preview: Going winless in district play is always a tough pill to swallow. A record of just one win compared to nine losses is difficult, too. However, nearly 20 points a game last season is a respectable building block for the Cavaliers’ football program to lean on going into this upcoming season.
North Side
Cedric Hampton, Interim Head Coach
2021 Record (6-7 Overall, 3-2 District)
Preview: Just sliding below .500 is a tough way to end last season for the Indians, as North Side lost the last four of five outings. Steady offense at 22.9 points a game will be a starting point for the team this season. Adjustments will need to be made as the Indians look to clean up almost 26 points a game given up defensively.
Obion County
Justin Palmer, Head Coach
2021 Record (4-6 Overall, 1-4 District)
With a less than ideal 4-6 record in 2021, Obion County has a few holes that it needs to fill. Starting with district play and the issues that arose, the team went 1-4 in district play. The Rebels put up a respectable 16 points per game; however they really struggled on the defensive side, allowing 27 points per game. This will certainly be an area that Obion County looks to clean up this season.
Milan
Derek Carr, Head Coach
2021 Record (5-6 Overall, 3-2 District)
With an overall record of 5-6 in 2021, the Milan Bulldogs actually had a very good outcome to their season, even if the record doesn’t show it. MHS ended the season with a positive district record of 3-2. The Dogs had big wins over Crockett County and Northside; and they fought South Gibson all the way to the end, eventually losing by three points in a stunner of a game. Milan has a well-rounded offense and a stout defense, which can hopefully be improved on in the 2022 season.
