From the Tennessee Highway Patrol –
The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting a Driver’s License Checkpoint on Highway 70 West in Madison County, July 1.
The primary goals of all driver’s license checkpoints are to take the necessary corrective action(s) whenever a violation is observed and/or detected and to attempt to favorably alter driving behavior while reducing the likelihood of future loss of property or life caused by unqualified drivers. Based on the 2016 checkpoint data, 10.0% of drivers passing through driver’s license checkpoints were committing some type of violation.
More specifically, driver license violations were issued to 3.7% of those vehicles passing through driver license checkpoints in 2016. Additional statistics reveal that of drivers involved in fatal crashes, 15.1% had an invalid license (revoked, suspended, no license). This evidence certainly lends credence and justification for the continued use of driver’s license checkpoints as an enforcement tool to advance the state’s compelling interest in saving lives.
