BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA – The Christian Brothers University women’s basketball team had a pair of players honored by the Gulf South Conference, as Brynne Lytle was named First Team All-Gulf South Conference, and Emily Jones Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year, as voted on by the league’s coaches, on Tuesday, March 2.
Lytle, a Trinity Christian Academy graduate, earned second team honors in 2018-19 and was a first team selection in 2019-20, is the first player in CBU women’s basketball history to be earn three straight All-GSC honors. Jones is the first Freshman of the Year for the Lady Bucs since Crystal Howard earned Co-GSC West Freshman of the Year honors in 2001-02.
Lytle finished the season No. 1 in NCAA Division II with 25.6 points per game, which is fourth in GSC history. The Jackson, Tenn., native also became the CBU women’s basketball all-time scoring leader with 1,585 career points, topping the previous record of 1,553 by Breanna Ridgell (2011-15). Lytle topped the previous record despite playing in 20 fewer games. She also led the league in three point field goals per game (2.8), minutes per game (39.3), and finished second in free throw percentage (88 percent) and steals per game (2.7).
Jones, a University School of Jackson graduate, wrapped up an impressive debut campaign that saw her average 12.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. The Jackson, Tenn., native poured in a career-high 29 points in an 84-57 win over Union (2.27). Jones scored in double figures in nine of 14 games and had at least 20 points in three different contests. Jones also finished as the league leader with an 89 percent free throw percentage (46-of-52).
Lytle helped the Lady Bucs earn 10 victories in conference games, which is tied for the highest total since 2016-17. The 10 league wins were one shy of being the most since the 2003-04 team that went 13-4 in league play.
